Eastern Redbud
Eastern Redbud is a beloved native tree known for its stunning display of small, rosy-pink flowers that bloom along bare branches in early spring. With heart-shaped leaves that emerge after flowering and a graceful branching form, it brings seasonal beauty and structure to gardens, especially in woodland or naturalized settings.
Simple Care Tips:
Light: Grows best in full sun to part shade (at least 4–6 hours of sun).
Water: Keep soil consistently moist, especially when young; drought-tolerant once established.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil; adaptable to various types, including clay.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape and remove dead or crowded branches.
Feeding: Apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer in early spring if needed.
Vitex
Vitex, also known as Chaste Tree, is a fast-growing, sun-loving shrub or small tree with fragrant, spiky clusters of lavender, blue, or white flowers that bloom throughout summer. Its airy, aromatic foliage and drought tolerance make it a favorite in pollinator gardens and water-wise landscapes.
Simple Care Tips:
Light: Requires full sun (6+ hours) for best flowering.
Water: Water regularly when young; once established, it's highly drought-tolerant.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil; tolerates poor or sandy conditions.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage new blooms.
Feeding: Not heavy feeders; a light application of balanced fertilizer in spring is sufficient.
Crape Myrtle
Crape Myrtle is a classic flowering tree or large shrub known for its long-lasting summer blooms in shades of pink, purple, red, or white. With smooth, peeling bark and vibrant fall foliage, it brings year-round interest to sunny landscapes and urban gardens.
Simple Care Tips:
Light: Needs full sun (6+ hours) to bloom its best.
Water: Water regularly during the first growing season; drought-tolerant once established.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil but adapts to various types.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove crossing branches and shape—avoid severe “topping.”
Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering.
